Dr. Helga Kristjánsdóttir promoted to the position of Professor

Dr. Helga Kristjánsdóttir has been promoted to the position of Professor in the Faculty of Business Administration at the University of Akureyri as of 1 August 2020. After completing a Doctoral degree in 2004, Helga worked as a temporary lecturer at the University of Iceland, Bifröst University, University of Akureyri and Reykjavik Energy Graduate School for Sustainable Systems (REYST), where she was involved in teaching 1–2 courses on average per year from the period 2005 to 2017. From 2018, Helga has worked as an Assistant Professor and then Associate Professor in teaching in undergraduate and Master’s studies in the Faculty of Business Administration at the University of Akureyri, in addition to being active in research work.

From 2002, Helga has also been the representative of Iceland in collaboration between academics in the Nordic countries in the field of international economics, as well as in conference management in connection with the NOITS conference and attends to organisation and funding of the conference in Iceland. Helga furthermore serves on the editorial board of the Baltic Journal of Economic Studies.

Helga will work to support research within the School of Business and Science at the University of Akureyri in her fields of expertise. These are business administration and economics with an emphasis on international economics and investment, as well as renewable energy and tourism.

Helga is the first woman to become Professor in the Faculty of Business Administration at the University of Akureyri. Helga was also the first Doctoral student to complete a Doctoral degree in the Faculty of Business and Economics at the University of Iceland.

Academic employees at the University of Akureyri can apply for promotion based on education, research activity, teaching and participation in management. Evaluation of applications is in the hands of the University’s Evaluation Committee, which assesses the results and activity of applicants in their work. Following this, the Rector decides on the basis of the opinion of the Evaluation Committee whether to promote the applicant. Evaluation of applications for promotion is consistent with relevant regulations of the University.
