The University of Akureyri was founded in 1987 and has quickly and steadily grown since that time
Studies leading to the BS degree in Nursing Studies span four years. Graduates obtain the protected professional title of nurse in Iceland. The programme is internationally accredited and graduates can pursue advanced studies.
Note that a competitive examination is held to determine who acquires the right to pursue study in the spring semester of the first year of study. Approximately 75 students attain this right every year. The grade from the competitive examination determines the right to continue the programme.
The main objectives of nursing are to strengthen the health of its clients, improve their condition during illness and contribute to enhanced quality of life, whether it be individuals, families or society as a whole. The field of nursing is diverse and can strengthen those who pursue it in various ways.
