Degree-seeking students

Foreign degree-seeking students apply on an equal basis with Icelandic students for the study programmes offered by the University of Akureyri. Applications are submitted electronically and will be open at the beginning of March until June 5th. If the advertised deadline falls on a weekend or a public holiday the deadline is the first working day after that day.

Polar Law - Now open for applications for the 2025-2026 school year! The application deadline for all Polar law applications is 1st April 2025.

Application deadlines

  • 1 April NON-EU/EEA CITIZENS  (Please note that the United Kingdom is no longer an EEA state)
  • 5 June EU/EEA CITIZENS

Application deadline is April 1st. To have the best chance of admission, all students should apply by April 1st. Applicants from Iceland and other EU/EEA countries are welcome to apply until June 5th, based on availability.

Study taught at the University Centre of the Westfjords

  • February 15th (first admissions), April 15h (second admissions) and June 5th (third admissions, domestic applications)

Please keep in mind that you need to upload the following documents

  • CV (curriculum vitae)
  • Statement of your objectives and expectations regarding the studies
  • Transcript of records
  • Copy of passport
  • Two letters of reference

Please note that submitted documents are not returned to applicants.

Application fee

Citizens of countries outside EEA/EFTA (exempting the Faroe Islands and Greenland) are required to pay a fee of 50 EUR for the handling and processing of their applications. The fee is charged as part of the online application process. The handling and processing fee is not refundable.

Application requirements

Icelandic matriculation examination (stúdentspróf: school leaving examination after three years of secondary school) or equivalent or at least 60 ECTS from recognized University. Students who apply for admission to graduate programmes must have completed a BA or BSc degree or comparable three-year university studies with a first-class grade (7.25). The admission requirements differ between School.
