Social Sciences Seminar

All welcome to Social Sciences Seminar!

The seminar will be held in English in room M101 and on Zoom

Dr. Gordon Neil Ramsay Associate Professor at the Faculty of Social Sciences will deliver the talk:

Who is the Media Now? Reflections on Journalism in a Time of Crisis

Debates on the "crisis in journalism" have been running for over a quarter of a century since the growth of online communication and social media. But recent developments in political communication, from the growth and increased sophistication of disinformation campaigns to the emergence of hyper-partisan media, challenge the modern conception of journalism as a fundamental pillar of democratic society.

In this seminar Dr Gordon Neil Ramsay draws on the wider themes of his research on political disinformation and the crisis in local journalism to explore some fundamental questions about the place of journalism in modern democracy. These include:

  • What fills the information gap when journalism declines?
  • Is constructing reality now easier than reporting on the real world?
  • How can democracy be safeguarded against information disorder?

All welcome!
