Keynote Speakers

Dr. Hafsteinn Einarsson - Language, Learning, and Healthcare: AI Innovations Relevant to Nursing Education

Hafsteinn Einarsson is an Associate Professor in Computer Science at the School of Engineering and Natural Sciences, University of Iceland. His teaching and research focus on the innovative application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in both education and healthcare domains.

In his teaching, he leads a course on applied artificial intelligence where students develop AI solutions from scratch where teh students decide what they want to build. These projects have included practical applications such as mole detection systems and hospital pamphlet questionnaire systems. He employs AI to personalize learning experiences, tailoring problems to match students' academic backgrounds and study domains. Furthermore, he applies AI to automate the creation of exams, enabling more frequent assessments.

Einarsson's research primarily centers on developing resources for AI systems to improve their understanding of Icelandic. He has developed various linguistic resources, including question-answering datasets and sentiment analysis datasets. These resources are crucial for advancing AI capabilities in the Icelandic language. Additionally, he has collaborated with the University Hospital in Iceland to create language models capable of predicting ICD-10 codes from electronic health records.

In his presentation, Hafsteinn will discuss his teaching methods and share insights from his work in applying AI to the healthcare domain. His expertise bridges the gap between computer science, education, and healthcare, offering perspectives that can be relevant to the integration of AI in nursing education and practice.

Dr. H. Ösp Egilsdóttir - Possibilities and challenges of using technology in nursing education

My current position is a head of department of the Institute of nursing and health science at the University of South-Eastern Norway.

My focus of teaching for the last years has been related to fundamental nursing care, basic physical assessment skills and clinical reasoning processes. These area of teaching has been in at the bachelor level (three-year) nursing education in Norway. My PhD research work and dissertation was an educational research project with mixed-method approach, where I co-design and tested a suite of mobile learning tool together with nursing students in all educational years. A significant element in the suite of mLearning tool was an integration of virtual simulation software. My research focus has also included researching virtual simulation including a scoping review on the topic. I have an extended professional network and collaboration partner related to researching and developing the use of virtual simulation within nursing education, especially related to learning health assessment and clinical reasoning. I have also been active in development of flexible and decentralized nursing education in the rural aeras (Telemark and Buskerud) surrounding the university. The aim was to offer nurse education to the people living in these areas and thereby meeting the critical need for nurses in the rural areas.
